在美国二十世纪五十年代初，男主角——一个意大利裔男人，带着全家搬入一个新购买的房中。房屋内原来的租客不愿意搬走，男主角与朋友们打算使用暴力撵走他们。但是，他们却发现租客的老婆要生孩子。大家就帮忙接生，可是生出来的孩子是黑人，大家都很惊诧，这使得租客离家出走再也没回来。男主角将租客老婆撵走后，良心发现帮她租了一个房间，之后就经常去她家做客。日子久了，两人关系变得暧昧，且因为男主角要上夜班，他就在深夜与租客老婆幽会。一段时间后，男主角老婆发现了老公的外遇，很生气，但打算原谅他。可是男主角发现老婆及朋友们都讨厌生下黑人的租客老婆，就一怒之下离开了他生活的圈子。最后，男主角与租客老婆共同奋斗，他梦寐以求的酒馆终于开张了，即使没有顾客。。山田日後承認在開拍此片之前，已心諳渥美清的肺病步入末期，決定此章為最後一章，並安排由淺丘瑠璃子演的莉莉送寅次郎踏上人生的最後一程。分別15年後，兩人於如詩如畫的奄美大島重逢，感情依舊，鬥氣繼續，沒完沒了似的。正如山田所想，雖然系列必須完結，但始終不想為寅次郎的故事／人生劃上句號。結局如常開放，代表寅一直繼續他的旅程，日本人依然有夢。 公映後翌年，渥美清病逝，享年68歲，本片亦成為他的遺作。 Yamada knew before production began that Atsumi's health has deteriorated to such an extent that Tora-san to the Rescue would be the last film in the series.
