七十年代，城市知青马杰（文章 饰）来到西北某农村插队，被村里漂亮种驴——黑六的叫声吸引。马杰嫌黑六不让他骑，某次工伤在诊所缝针时偷了麻醉剂打给黑六，队长大莲（岳红 饰）以为黑六生病，心急如焚。马杰奇迹般地“治愈”了黑六，赢得大莲和队里的信任，成为牲口饲养员。马杰一边喂驴，一边偷偷与村里的女青年彩凤（白静 饰）相恋。与此同时，马杰对黑六只配种不干活的特殊待遇愈发不满，并对大莲“驴比人值钱”的论调暗自气愤，发泄中竟打坏了黑六的“命根子”。无法配种也不能干活的黑六被马杰宰杀，却没曾想黑六的弟弟，毛驴黑七，从此与马杰不共戴天。人与驴的斗争愈演愈烈。。一名受人喜爱的女子进入神秘机器后突然变成了韩式炸鸡，而这只是一系列不可预测事件的开始。在这个催泪又滑稽的悬疑故事中，两个男人努力拯救他们的爱人/女儿。。Plebs is described as "a thoroughly modern comedy in an ancient setting."
